Pre-K Class
The Pre-K Class is a more homogeneous group of children that are all preparing to enter Kindergarten the following school year. It was originally called the Discover Four-Day Class and was designed to meet the needs of those children who missed the cut off date for Kindergarten or had late summer birthdays and were not quite mature enough for Kindergarten. The popularity of this program transformed the class into a Pre-K class for children turning four before September. This class has higher expectations for independence than the Preschool Class and it is definitely a great Kindergarten Prep choice for children who already have some school experience.
Classroom Philosophy
- Pre-K children learn how to follow classroom routines in a nurturing and encouraging setting.
- There is an integrated, process-oriented, and thematic approach to curriculum.
- Children’s literature is incorporated daily during group story times and individual story telling.
- Activities are based on weekly/monthly themes that combine language, math, science, music, and art related experiences.
- Open-ended learning activities are provided for the children to explore throughout the day as they visit various interest areas.
- Caring and experienced teachers foster independence through warm and encouraging direction, while serving as facilitators of the learning process.
- There is a careful balance of individual, small group, and large group activities throughout the day that foster social skills and confidence in the classroom setting.
Ultimately, it is the goal of Discover Preschool to help children to accomplish the following skills to ensure their readiness for Kindergarten and to become responsible people and lifelong learners.
- Work and play independently as well as cooperatively with others, while following classroom rules and routines.
- Have the necessary social skills and ability to get along with others in a cooperative learning environment where children learn from teachers and from one another.
- Ability to attend to and focus on what someone else is saying; both teachers and peers.
- Learn to participate in structured classroom situations such as group time, group activities, and story reading.
